Pharmacotherapy Treatments

Pharmacotherapy Treatments for Pain Management

Musculoskeletal disease states can lead to chronic and intractable pain and in such patients it becomes necessary to provide symptomatic relief through
Pharmacotherapy Treatments or pharmacological interventions. Pharmaceuticals can be used as an adjunct to treatment, or as a standalone approach in intractable conditions. There are multiple nonprescription and prescription medications that are helpful in relieving pain and addressing related symptoms while the source of pain is receiving the treatment.

Careful attention to pain management in Pharmacotherapy Treatments is a critical component of the patient's recovery as acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain can lead to depression, difficulty sleeping and difficulty in exercising, all of which in return can exacerbate and prolong a painful musculoskeletal condition.

Two types of non prescription medications are used in Pharmacotherapy Treatments, acetaminophen (Tylenol) and non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly recommended in pain management. For short periods of time prescription medications such as narcotic pain medications, prescription level NSAlDs and muscle relaxers may help to alleviate pain or related complications. In chronic pain, the standard of care is to use long acting opiates to relieve pain, suffering and provide a better quality of life. This could be for non malignant as well as malignant pain disorders. Other classes of prescription medications such as antidepressants or antiseizure medications can also modulate the sensation of certain types of pain and can be taken on a prolonged basis.

A medication that has been utilized in our clinic is Botox / Myobloc. It is  injectable and used for chronic cervical dystonia and/or chronic myofascial pain disorders as well as now being used for neuropathic conditions.
